The sanitary import permit is a document issued under Section 3 (a) of the Livestock Importation Act 1898 authorising import of livestock and livestock products. It is not a licence but it communicates the sanitary requirement to be fulfilled by the exporting country before the entry of livestock product into India. It is issued by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. This permit is essential for importing livestock products into India to ensure that they meet the necessary health and safety standards and plays a critical role in mitigating the potential risk of introducing exotic diseases into India through imported livestock products. The following can apply for a sanitary import permit: (a) An individual/ importer having valid Import Export Code (IEC) and involved in trading and marketing of various livestock product; and (b) industries that require livestock for further processing.
